Today electronics based products are a part of our daily life. There range is from electronic gadgets used in houses to more sophisticated diagnostic equipments in hospitals. Advancements n Fiber Optic Communication has revolutionized the Telecommunication field. Telecommunication and Consumer Electronics are causing a revolution in day-to-day life. Experts in the above fields are in great demand in these fields.

This is the only Government institution offering Diploma course in Electronics & Communication in Thiruvananthapuram District. This branch of diploma is giving the students exposure in the state of the art Electronics, Telecommunication and Computer Systems.

The curriculum apart from conventional and basic applications, has widened its area and has included subjects to the latest technology including Advanced Microprocessors, Modern Communication Systems which related with Fiber Optics Communication, Microcontroller & its Application and Bio-Medical Instrumentation whhich relates entirely with Medical Electronic Instruments. Students are given exposure in the above areas by offering these papers as elective courses in the last 2 semesters.

Computer Technology is rapidly progressing and students are offered courses in Computer Hardware, Computer Communication, Data Structure & C Programming. During the last semester each student should undertake a project work. Project work should include Design, Fabrication/Development, Testing etc incroporating the latest technology abd trends in the industry. Each student should also present a seminar paper on the latest technology and trends in the area of their specialization. Overall purpose of the seminar is to create awareness on the latest trends of industry, building up of confidence in students to face audience and training in technical paper preparation and presentation skills.

On successfull completion of this course eligible students can go for higher studies for BTech/BE in Electronics, Applied Electronics and Electronics & Communication branches.

The following labs instituted for the courses offered are a real help to the students to gain pratical knowledge in the subjects.

1. Basic Electronics/Electronics Circuit Lab

Pratical sessions are conducted to study the characteristics if basic building blocks of electroni circuits like resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers, transistors etc. Single stage transistorrs, amplifiers, Push-Pull amplifiers, Emitter follower circuits, voltage regulator circuits etc are constructed and their characteristics studied using CRO, Signal Generators, Multimeter etc

2. Digital Electronics Lab

In this lab basic digital circuits like AND, OR, NOT, Ex-OR gates etc are used to construct circuits and thier characteristics are studied. Multiplexer circuits, Flip Flops, ADC, DAC, TTL Circuits are constructed and thier properties studied using Digital Trainer Kits and CRO.

3. Linear Integrated Circuits Lab

Difference amplifier, Summing Amplifier, Differentiator, Integrator, Comparator, Schmitt Trigger, PLL etc circuits are constructed and thier characteristics studied.

4. Microprocessor Lab

In this lab 8085, 8086 Microprocessors are studied in depth, with the help of assembly level programs. Applications of Microprocessors are studied by interfacing microprocessor and peripheral devices like matrix keyboard, ADC card, DAC card, stepper motor control, traffic signal generator circuits etc. 8086 Microprocessors are studied by interfacing with PC using TASM assembler.

5. Communication Lab

AM, FM, PM, PAM, PCM, Demodulator circuits are constructed and their properties studied using AM.FM generator, CRO, Signal Generator etc.

6. Equipment Maintenance & Computer Hardware Lab

Various home appliances like AM/FM Radio receiver, Tape Recorder, PA System, Booster Amplifier, Hotplate, Heater, Automatic Iron, Mixer, Grinder, Fan, Washing Machine, Refrigerator, Voltage Stabilizer etc trouble shooting and circuit tracing are done in this lab. Disassembling and assembling of Computer System and loading of application softwares, installing hard disk etc are done in this lab.

7. Electronic Drafting & Workshop

Drafting & Tracing of Circuits, Coil Winding of Transformers, Fabrication & Assembly of PCBs, etc are done in this lab.
