Regular Activities 2004 - 2005
This year 2004-2005 has been and epoch making one for the National Service Scheme of Govt. Polytechnic College, Neyyattinkara unit. We proudly proclaim that we have conducted and carried out numerous notable and quotable activities. Now were calm, collected gentle and generous in the satisfaction of doing a lot of dilapidated downtrodden. Rehabilitation of Tsunami victims, Film festival, Health awareness programme, Blood donation, Hospital ward reconstruction are the only few things. This year we got an opportunity to host the state level camp. Inexhaustible effort, teamwork, high human spirit, endurance and enthusiasm enabled us to make the camp an orientating one. Ten of our volunteers attended the National Integration camp held at Bihar.
On 02-06-2004, first unit meeting was held and 46 volunteers were present. This meeting formed an advisory committee, Principal Shri.B Vijayan as Chairman and S Geetha (HOD EA), T Sherly Wilson(CE Cell Manager), M Chandrakumar (CPS project officer), Chribuna Viswas (Lecturer in English), Reginald Peter (N C C Officer) and T Rajashekaran Nair(Senior Superintedant) as members.
The unit meeting held on 03-06-2004 selected Aneesh P R and Aradhana M K Nair as Volunteer Secrataries.
On 04-06-2004, 10 volunteers participated in the inaugural function of 'Rail Swatchatha' conducted at the Centeral Railway Station, Thiruvanathapuram. They took part in the effort of cleaning trains.
The general body meeting on 09-06-2004 held at N S S Room charted out the activities to be carried out during the year.
On 26-06-2004 the unit involved in cleaning the whole college campus. On 01-07-04, 30 selected volunteers attended the Annual Award Ceremony at Senate Hall, Thiruvananthapuram. A Health Awareness Programmed was conducted on 21-07-2004 at adopted village. By distributing notices to the people, we given information and they were made aware of the plague and Hepatitis B.
Welcome Function
A function was arranged on 04-08-2004 in order to welcome the first year diploma students. A campaign was conducted on 09-08-2004 with view of sharing the spirit of NSS with first year students and thereby motivating them to join the NSS. In the very next week the registration first year students started.
Independence Day
On the 15-08-2004 the N S S unit celebrated the Independence day. Sri. B Vijayan the Principal of Govt. Polytechnic College, Neyyattinkara hoisted the National flag and gave Independence Day message. On this day on seminar on 'Young India' was led by Shri K Saseendra Dev.
Onam Celebration
Onam celebration was made on 20th August keeping the notion of 'Communal Harmony' in mind. Students made 'Athapookalam' which was inspiring and enthralling.
Orientation Camp
An Orientation Camp for first year students was conducted on 18-09-2004 at Seminar Hall. Shri B Vijayan, The Principal, inaugurated the camp. The camp was very lively and informative with a seminar led by Shri. G P Sajith Babu, (NSS Regional Officer) on the topic 'What is NSS? Scope and its effective implimentation'. This gave the volunteers awareness about the genesis of NSS. Shri. Brahma Nayakam (Director of Fourth Focus India) handled a workshop on 'Personality Development'. The workshop was highly educative and informative for the students. The camp brought the first year students under the spell of NSS.
The unit celebrated NSS day on 24th September. The Principal Shri. B Vijayan gave an inspiring NSS day message to the volunteers.
On 1st October, eight NSS volunteers donated blood at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. Shri. Pavithrakumar gave vivid and solid information about the importance of blood donation.
Anti-AIDS Day
Exhibiting banners revealing Anti-AIDS information at Perumpazhuthoor & Neyyattinkara on 1st December. Our N S S unit observed the Anti-AIDS Day. A photo and poster exihibition was conducted on the 1st December.
Film Festival
In connection with the human rights day on 11th December a film festival named 'AKAIRA KURASOVA' was conducted. A fine and fantastic Japanese film was presented. Human desires, despairs, different faces of human aspirations, failures, frustrations, attitudes and approaches in the film made it’s a fascinating one.
Sneha Sagara Yathra
Sneha Sagara Yatha at Shanghumugham beach headed by the Hon.Justice V R Krishna Iyer held on the 14th December was a thrilling experience. Eight NSS volunteers attended that function. Hon. Justice Krishna Ayer gave the peace message to the voluntees. Many artistic cultural and social leaders of the Kerala like Shri. K J Yesudas, reputed writer Shri. M T Vasudevan Nair, Dr. K N Panikar, Justice P Shamsudeen, beloved poet Shri. O N V Kurup, Shri. P Gopinathan Nair, Shri. Thomas Kochery and Swami Agnivesh took part in this gorgeous function.
Annual Ten-Day Camp
The annual ten-day camp of the year 2004-2005 started on the 24th December. Govt.Polytechnic college campus was the camp venue. All the volunteers reached at the camp site and divided themselves into several groups. They arranged the accommodation, food, water, entertainment and other facilities.
Neyyattinkara municipal chairman Shri. T Sukumaran inaugurated the function of the ten-day camp at Govt. Thaluk Hospital, Neyyattinkara. Smt. Kamala Rajaram (Superintend of the Hospital) and Dr. Syam Kumar (RMO)
made the occation glorious with their presence.
Seventy volunteers in this camp reconstructed the 7th ward of the hospital, which was deplorably dilapidated. By the strength of the hand work and esteemed effort they completed this task and they built a new toilet. Now this ward is used as post operation ward.
During the camp every volunteers woke-up at 5.30am, Yoga at 6.00am and then they involved in their project work from 8.30am to 1pm. Every day the seminar section started at 2.30pm in the evening. There was cultural programs and day today process analysis of the camp was made after supper.
Dauntlessness and dedication enabled the volunteers to progress in their project work day by day. The volunteers repaired hospital bed, chairs, oxygen cylinders, tables and they painted all the grills, windows, doors and other items of the hospital.
The ten-day camp became very interesting and inspiring with several seminars.
On the 27th December Shri. S Ajith led a seminar on 'Personality Development'. On 28th December Shri. K Sasindra Dev, Lecturer in English, V V H S S Nemom, led a seminar on 'Literature'. On the 29th December Shri. Jayaprakash, Lecturer of our college gave a class and demonstrated some devices to clean internal system of the body. The same day there was a debate on 'Dowry and women empowerment'. "Our responsibilities to society and family" were the seminar led by Smt.Omana Amma on 30th December. Shri. Chribuna Viswas, Lecturer in English, GPTC, Neyyattinkara conducted a seminar on 'Violence and Human rights' on 31st December. On 1st January a seminar on 'Law' was conducted. Advocate Shri. Thlayal Kesavan Nair gave wast and wide knowledge about laws.
Two film shows on 25th December and 1st January were conducted the film exhibited were 'Pithamahan', 'Passion of the Christ' and 'Gandhi'. All films were educative and thought provoking.
Shri. Thambanoor Ravi, MLA Inaugurated the valedictory function conducted in the Govt. Thaluk Hospital, Neyyattinkara. With the presence of Shri.T Sukumaran(Municipal Chairman), Smt.Kamala Rajaram (Superintend of Thaluk Hospital), Dr.Syam Kumar (RMO), Padmakumar (Standing committee chairman, Health) graced the occasion of valediction.
The combined and collaborated efforts of the volunteers the guidance of non-student volunteers presents of programme officer and the selfless co-operation of local people made the annual ten-day camp a great success and it gave in boundless satisfaction.
On 4th January the ten-day campers met together in the NSS room, narrated everyone's valuable experiences, revealed each ones lessons of social service and there roles in camp. It was a high heeling experienced to all, the participants and non-participants. This programme was also motivating.

Gandhi Jayanthy
In connection with Gandhi Jayanthy on 2nd October volunteers entered discussion on the 'Relevance of Gandhian thoughts in the modern world'. After this they involved in cleaning campus and cultural activities.
Rail Swatchatha
On 9th October the unit celebrated 'Rail Swatchatha'. The function was inaugurated by Shri. T Sukumaran, Municipal Chairman, Neyyattinkara. The NSS volunteers removed plastics from railway tracks at Neyyattinkara Railway Station. Notices revealing the danger of plastics were distributed to people to make them aware of the dangers and evil effect created by plastics.
State Level Camp
A preparatory camp was conducted from 15th October with the intention of impending state level camp. Volunteers cleaned every nook and corner of the campus decorated the whole place attractively arranged dinning hall and seminar hall. Thus every thing was accommodated.
With the flag hoisting ceremony by our respected principal Shri. B Vijayan ,the state level camp started on 16th October. Eighteen NSS Units from 15 colleges participated. Shri. N Sudaran Nadar, Hon.Deputy Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assemby presided over the inaugural function. Interesting and important seminars were conducted in this camp. Shri. Subash Chandra Bose, Scientist of State land use board led a seminar on 'Rain water harvesting'. Another seminar was led Shri. S Ajith, 'Coordinator & Faculty Skills Attitude & Talent Improvement'. The first section of 2nd day was controlled and led by Shri. Dr. George Chakkachery, Scientist and Officer in charge CWRDM subcentre. Swami Aswathy Thirunal took the 2nd section on the topic 'Personality Development'.
On 10th November, NSS Volunteers made college campus & canteen tidy and its surroundings clean. Drainage system was also made into proper condition.
A seminar on 'Interpersonal Relation and Communication' was led by Shri. Chribuna Viswas , Lecturer in English, GPTC, Neyyattinkara. It was an inspiring, enthrawaling and interesting seminar. The presence and participation of college staff and non-volunteers made the occasion grand and auspicious.
Rehabilitation of Tsunami Victims
On 10th January a general body meeting was conducted. The meeting decided to help Tsunami Victims at Colachel. With the purpose of a cycle rally was conducted from Govt. Polytechnic to Colachel on 15th January. Other volunteers helped to build a temporary shed to Tsunami Victims, who lost everything in life. The Deputy Thahasildar of Colachel gave very valuable instructions and informations to our volunteers for their dedication and hard work.
On 20th January the volunteers met together and the volunteers who visited the Tsunami affected area narrated hair-raising events to the other volunteers. They revealed their experienced in Tsunami rehabilitation at Colachel.
Republic Day
The unit celebrated the Republic Day on 26th January. Sri. K Madhu, lecturer of our college hoisted national flag. The volunteers saluted the flag and reciting the National Anthem. After this there was a group discussion on the topic of 'Development of College Campus, problems of the society and eternal solution for the problems'.
Gardening Course
On 3rd February gardening course under Community Polytechnic Scheme started. The unit prepared a beautiful garden in front of the college. Certificates of gardening course were given to 20 volunteers.
Socio-Economic Survey And Drinking Water Survey
Unit conducted a socio-economic survey under CPS and a drinking water survey under CWRDM sub centre on 7th February, covering the houses of Neyyatinkara Municipal area including the adopted village. After being given proper instructions, the volunteers were divided into several group and each group was allocated with particular area to conduct the survey. The socio-economic survey covered 3000 houses and volunteers got first hand experienced on the pathetic and painful situations in which the poor live.
The water survey 'A Project on Drinking water and sanitations service in Kerala comprehensive study' enabled the volunteers to understand the importance of water sources and the value of drinking water. They remarked in mind 'water is the base of life'. This survey covered 8000 houses. On 12th and 13th February the NSS Technical Cell conducted the annual meet at Royal Engineering College Thrisur. Five volunteers from our unit participated. The award for the year 2004-2005 was distributed in this function. The volunteers from several units presented in various cultural programmes during the meet.
National Integration Camp at Bihar
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in occasion with Jayaprakash University organized a National Integration camp from 3rd to 12th March 2005. More than 150 volunteers and 20 programme officers from different state participated in the camp. Various service activities were carried out during the camp. Volunteers from our unit participated in National integration rally, cultural activities, debates and discussions. Our volunteers also presented Kerala culture such as 'Kalamezhuthum pattum', 'Thiruvathira', 'Oppana', 'Folk Dance', and 'Folk Songs'. We conducted a photo exhibition related to International Women’s Day on 8th March. The team got appreciation from Vice Chancellor, Minister, and University Members.
Natural Camp
Our volunteers got the opportunity to understand the cultural diversity of the nation through this camp. The camp was a unique experience for volunteers. On 12th and 13th March unit conducted a Natural Camp at Thekkady. We went inside the forest from Periyar Tiger resource to Mullaperiyar Dam. Shri Sunil, the forest officer takes a seminar on 'Nature and wild life'. Volunteers took part in boating also.
During the camp the volunteers learn about nature and wild life were in close contact with nature. Beauty of silence and wild life was rapture to all of us.
